Track 7:
When Doves Cry
(Extended Mix)
Performed by Quindon
Tarver
Written by Prince Rogers Nelson/Controversy Music Publishing
Produced by Nellee Hooper
Co-Produced by
Marius De Vries & Craig Armstrong
From the motion picture William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet
This beautiful song is sung by the amazing
Quindon Tarver in the film, Romeo + Juliet, Quindon was cast in the movie as the
lead choir boy, and he sings When Doves Cry as Father Laurence imagines a
reconciliation of the Capulets and Montagues through the marriage of Romeo and Juliet.
This track is featured on Volume 2 of the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack.
This extended mix featured on Something
For Everybody continues where the Romeo + Juliet version left off, with an
extended running time and additional backing lyrics. Both interpretations of When
Doves Cry are fantastic reditions of the original version sung by Prince, with
Quindon's voice bringing a great upbeat feeling to the song.
Here's what Baz Luhrmann had
to say about When Doves Cry (Extended Mix):
"One of the most
important things in the way that we work is that we like to develop music as a script, so
if you read the early drafts of Romeo and Juliet you will see that it says "a gospel
choir is singing in the church. A young boy with a voice like Jamiroquai steps
forward" and we recognize that the hymn is actually "When Doves Cry".
Quindon Tarver was brought to our attention by a representative at Virgin who had just
signed this remarkable young singer in Texas. The Miami Sound Machine treatment is
something that the brilliant Nellee Hooper and Marius DeVries really created with a little
bit of coaching from me when we were working on the second album in London at the
beginning of the year."
