Strictly Ballroom

DVD Review

Special features on on the Red Curtain edition of the Strictly Ballroom DVD are as follows:

DOCUMENTARY

"Samba to Slow Fox" dance documentary  (1986, 30 min.)

This documentary looks at real life ballroom dancers in Australia, and the lengths they will go to in order to try and achieve success. It is an insightful look at the types of people who revel in participating in this dance sport and how they perceive themselves and those around them. The DVD states that this documentary was drawn upon by Luhrmann and co. in making Strictly Ballroom, and I could recognise several sets and characters that had been modelled on this production. After watching this documentary, I was also impressed by the accuracy of Strictly Ballroom in relation to what really goes on in the world of competitive ballroom dancing.
