Track 4:
Perhaps Perhaps
Perhaps
Performed by Doris Day
Written by Joe Davis & O. Farres/Southern Music (publishing)
From Strictly Ballroom
This song is featured in Strictly Ballroom
as Scott dances with Fran behind the scenes at the ballroom championships. Other
characters gather backstage to watch, but the song keeps us focussing on the chemistry
between the two lead characters.
To be honest, I never thought I'd become a fan
of this type of music, especially a song originally sung in 1947! However, after repeated
listenings of Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and its inclusion in Strictly Ballroom,
I find myself thinking, "Hey, this is actually a pretty groovy song!" I guess
Baz Luhrmann's plan worked (see his comments below!) I have been converted, and I now
really do believe that Doris Day really is the 'cheese cool' diva of louge music!
Here's what Baz Luhrmann had
to say about Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps:
"All those years when I
was working on Strictly Ballroom, "lounge music" had not really taken off.
People felt a little nervous about acknowledging that the highly produced cocktail lounge
sound, although cheesy, was extremely enjoyable to listen to and made you feel cool. We
often make use in our work of something we like to term "cheese cool" and no-one
is a bigger diva of this style than Doris Day."
