'Young Hearts Run Free' - Kym Mazelle
The song begins as Mercutio's
bright red sportscar pulls up on the beach at Sycamore Grove. He laughs and applies some
red lip stick in his side mirror before getting out of the car and strolling in his high
heels across the sand towards his friends. Mercutio is dressed as a sparkling drag queen!
Mercutio grins as he reveals invitations to the Capulet Ball, presenting them to each of
the Montague boys, and singing along with the song (which we can assume is coming from his
car stereo!) He sings, "Ending up as just another lost and lonely wife." Then,
as he pulls Romeo's invitation from beneath his skirt, he sings, "Young hearts, run
free, never be hung up, hung up like Rosline and thee."
After the Queen Mab speech, the song starts up again as the Montague boys drive towards
the Capulet Ball. There is a slower, more whimsical feel to the song as we watch Mercutio
mime along to the words. The song fades as Romeo enters the mansion in a dream-like state
and says to himself, "The drugs are quick."
We then cut to the mansion staircase where a flamboyant Mercutio is dancing wildly to the
loud, upbeat chorus of the song. Overall, it is a joyous song that is a most fitting theme
for Mercutio in the film.
