_______________

For years, I followed the making of Baz Luhrmann's Australia and my movie review details how much I enjoyed the experience of finally watching the finished film. But the day I first saw Australia actually marked two firsts for me. I stayed to watch the entire end credits on the big screen and, as they rolled by, I recognised many familiar names of cast and crew. However, I also saw one particular name that I was previously unfamiliar with. I distinctly remember sitting there, transfixed and mesmerised by the end credits soundtrack. I instantly fell in love with the beautiful melody of By the Boab Tree, and I was also fascinated by the haunting vocals in the alternate version of Waltzing Matilda. When I saw the name Ophelia of the Spirits in the soundtrack listing, I realised that Luhrmann's production team had made a brilliant discovery.

While doing my usual Google search for Baz Luhrmann news recently, I came across an article announcing the release of Ophelia of the Spirits' new album. I realised that since I loved her music on Australia, I really should find out more about her other works, and I was very keen to check out The Secret Garden.

It is difficult to classify Ophelia of the Spirits' music. I think there is a Celtic influence in the use of instrumental melody, which I love. Overall, I find her music to be both haunting and spiritual, and always beautiful. I believe the music has a soothing quality that makes you feel relaxed and at ease with yourself and the world around you. Despite some darker subject matter, I find it to be ultimately uplifting. It is hard to pick a favourite track, but my particular favourites are the poignant Like Rain and the powerful Someone Like Me.

I really hope that this album does well and gives Ophelia of the Spirits even more exposure, both nationally and internationally. Australia was a great platform for people (like me!) to discover this extremely talented artist and I believe her music deserves to be heard on a much wider scale. I encourage everyone to check out The Secret Garden and spread the word! :)
