Aussie Epic Update
- The following recent news article appears to give an update about Baz Luhrmann's much-anticipated Australian epic:
Crowe tipped for new epic
By Ros Reines, Sunday Telegraph
August 21, 2005
"One of Australia's most original directors, Baz Luhrmann is rumoured to have his eye on Russell Crowe for the lead role in a mysterious Australian epic love story which could start shooting as early as February.
Nicole Kidman is another name that has been tossed around in connection with the project. A team of writers is reportedly working on the film which is set between the two wars in Outback Australia.
However, Crowe recently told one of the trade publications that it was all news to him.
"I really believe in what Nicole and I could bring to the screen together, and Baz is somebody I would go to the ends of the earth with. I really don't know anything about what is being printed in newspapers, but considering I see Baz quite regularly for coffee and he hasn't brought it up . . . whatever."
Adding to the intrigue Luhrmann is also due to start filming his long-awaited epic based on the story of Alexander the Great as early as next year."
This article is somewhat intriguing as
it features two brand new pieces of information - that shooting could start in February,
and that it is "set between the two wars in Outback Australia." I can only
assume this means it may be set between World War 1 and World War 2. This is the
first information I have found regarding the plot, and filming beginning in
February is certainly news to me! :-)
However, this promising article then goes on to contradict itself by saying that ATG is still set to begin filming next year,
which we know is not true!
I am now left wondering just how much of this article is accurate. We have already read about Russell Crowe's comments and we already knew that Nicole Kidman has also been rumoured to star. I do hope there is some truth to filming starting early next year, but I think we will have to wait and see if this news is verified by other sources before getting too excited! Let's hope there's more information soon!

Dinner with Baz!
- A fantastic opportunity has arisen for people to enjoy a fabulous 'Behind the Red Curtain' themed night, to be held in Sydney on 10th September. It promises "behind the scenes buzz from Luhrmann's career" and the chance to question Baz Luhrmann himself! I would definitely have attended personally if I was not living in Scotland right now... If anyone is lucky enough to attend, please contact me! Special thanks to foxy at Nicole Kidman United and NKU's wonderful 'roving reporter' for the following article:
The Sun-Herald

S4 DIARY

Popsy draws back the curtain on Baz
"THE Australian Theatre for Young People is hosting a $750-a-plate dinner - of which $500 is tax deductible - "Behind the Red Curtain with Baz Luhrmann", at Trackdown Scoring Stage, Fox Studios, on September 10. After noshing down a slap-up supper, guests will hear behind-the-scenes buzz from Luhrmann's career in film, opera and music. (You may ask Baz questions from the floor.)
To book, call Giselle on 9270 2402.
Chairwoman of ATYP Antoinette "Popsy" Albert, who has known Luhrmann - a "genius", she says - since the get-go of Strictly Ballroom, which she and her husband, Ted, eventually produced, confirms it will be the most fabulous night. And if anyone knows fabulous, it's Popsy."

Aussie Epic - Rehashed News
- It's been over a month since any news was reported regarding Luhrmann's possible Australian epic. However, this evening I caught a snippet on a UK entertainment television programme that said Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe were planning to star together as lovers in a romantic movie. When I went online to check for news, I was disappointed to find a rehashed article that appears to have originated from Contact Music. The article sheds no light on the situation. Indeed, I am quite sure the quote from Kidman was taken from another article posted some time ago...
Nevertheless, the Contact Music article,
posted yesterday, reads as follows:
Crowe
and Kidman to Star in Luhrmann Romance
"Australian actor pals RUSSELL CROWE and NICOLE KIDMAN are hoping to play lovers in an upcoming BAZ LUHRMANN film.
Kidman was disappointed earlier this year (05) when the independent Aussie film EUCALYPTUS was cancelled, because co-star Crowe was unhappy with the script.
However, the actress is hoping to finally share the screen with her old friend, under the guidance of her MOULIN ROUGE! director and close pal Luhrmann.
She enthuses, "Baz is putting together a love story at this very moment that Russell and I are interested in doing together.
"I'd be thrilled if this worked out because it's important to us to put money back into the Australian economy."

This article is rather similar to another Contact Music article posted back in May, which read as follows:
Kidman
+ Crowe Plan a Fine Film Romance with Baz
NICOLE KIDMAN and RUSSELL CROWE seem to be keen to put the disastrous EUCALYPTUS behind them and move on with their plans to team up for a movie.
The couple had signed on to star in Eucalyptus but the project was halted due to wrecked sets and controversial script issues.
But that hasn't stopped Kidman and Crowe from planning another project together - Australian director BAZ LUHRMANN is in negotiations with the pair about a new romance film he is planning.
Luhrmann, who directed Kidman in MOULIN ROUGE, insists his new project is like "an Aussie GONE WITH THE WIND."

It seems that Contact Music has rehashed the limited information known about the project, and a few other media publications have latched on, perhaps forgetting this is old news . I think this just goes to show how much confirmation from Baz is needed! I've been saying this for a while now, but let's hope he speaks out soon! :-)
