This song sets the stage for what is undisputedly one of the most hilarious sequences in movie history!!!
The Duke is annoyed with Satine's lack of interest in him and threatens to abandon the production, but Harold Zidler makes one final plea and, through this song, he convinces the Duke that he has convinced Satine to confess as he makes Satine feel 'like a virgin'!
The Duke is a bit wary at first, and deservedly so! His reaction reflects the bizarre situation of the scene as he is chased around the room by the campest singest French waiters I've ever seen! However, the Duke soon likens to the idea and starts to participate in a hilarious dance sequence, chasing a mockingly terrified Zidler around the room like a hungry predator as the waiters continue prancing and dancing around the room! The entire concept of this sequence is pure genius. It is a perfect offset to the serious melodrama that drives the story of the film, and the sequence is a well-timed opportunity to relieve the audience from the tragic fate of Satine - if only for a few minutes. It is definitely one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen on film, and I don't think anyone who's seen Moulin Rouge will ever think of Madonna's version of Like a Virgin in quite the same way again!
