This song is the opening act of the Spectacular Spectacular musical extravaganza. The Duke sits in the front row of the new theatre with an empty seat next to him and a bunch of roses ready to greet his love when she finishes the show. However, the musical is not merely a staged performance, it also sets the scene for the 'real-life' fate of Satine and Christian.
Hindi Sad Diamonds has a vibrant ferocity that serves to depict the determination of the performers to make the show succeed. However, this is juxtaposed with Satine's sorrowful lead performance and her haunting version of Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend. Her sheer will power is evident as she goes through the motions of the performance and does not resist the fate that awaits her at the hands of the 'evil maharaja'. Indeed, as Zidler's maharaja places his arms possessively around her chest, we realise that ultimately Satine is indeed his object and Zidler is determined to protect his 'investment' at any cost. This feeling of helplessness is heightened by the Duke's crazed stare and his chilling echo of Zidler's words - "She is mine." Little does he know that Satine's fate has already been decided.
Hindi Sad Diamonds is a brilliant compilation arranged by Steve Sharples, who is also responsible for the excellent Bolero that accompanies the end credits. Hindi Sad Diamonds has a strong Indian influence that stems from a remixed version of Sameer's Chamma Chamma. Along with the colourful costume design, the inclusion of this song serves to liken the stage performance to that of a Bollywood musical. It is a wonderful concept that works very well in setting off the sequence of events that will lead to the film's heartbreaking finale.
