DVD Review

Personally, I believe the Moulin Rouge! double disc edition is the most impressive DVD set I've ever seen! It is beautifully presented and showcases an amazing collection of special features that would take me many many hours to review here in the detail they deserve. I highly that recommend you check out every feature out for yourself. Exploring the DVD is a most entertaining experience and you will learn an amazing amount of fun and informative material about the production, making you appreciate the movie even more.

I bought the Region 1 (USA) version of the DVD. I have been told that the Region 4 (Australasia) DVD is identical. The Region 2 (UK/Europe) DVD contains the majority of the special features, but does not include the early versions of the Moulin Rouge! script, as written by Baz Luhrmann and co-writer Craig Pearce.

Commentaries:

The first disc features the movie in its original cinematic format, plus two feature length commentaries that I definitely recommend. Commentaries made by Baz Luhrmann and co. are always highly entertaining, and the Moulin Rouge! ones are no exception! One commentary is provided by Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin (Costume/Production Designer) and Don McAlpine (Choreographer), and features lots of interesting information about the making of the movie. The other commentary is by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce (Co-Writer) and delves more into the development of the plot, revealing lots of early ideas for characters and alternate story lines.

Behind the Red Curtain Version:

The first disc also features a Behind The Red Curtain version of the movie, which is an interactive feature that incorporates a variety of short clips into the film. These informative clips let us glimpse historical, artistic and technical views of the making of Moulin Rouge!

This fourth version of Moulin Rouge! is ideal for people who have seen the movie a few times and would like to learn more about how it was made. Personally, I believe that anyone who wants to better understand the huge amount of work that was put into this production should also take the time to listen to both commentary versions. However, if commentaries are not your thing or you are just looking for a general overview, this version alone will definitely increase your knowledge of how the movie came to be. In total, there are eight clips featured in the Behind the Red Curtain version.

Special Features:

The second disc features an extensive collection of special features, including interviews with the cast and crew, script comparisons, unseen footage, extended dance sequences with multi camera options, music clips, design concepts, trailers and photos, as well as one of my personal favourites - the hilarious 'mock previsualisations' provided by Baz Luhrmann!
